Score 9
These look wonderful. Some will probably say they are too dark but that appears to be tasty char/carmelization to me. Nice, thick, meaty, juicy looking ribs.

Suggestion: The lower left rib on its side is way thinner than the one on the top right. I almost deducted a point since it looks so much thinner than all the rest. Try to match them up for better symmetry.
Suggestion#2 Let me know where you live so I can come and have you cook some of these for me!!! Thanks for submitting such a clear picture too.

7. Cuts are kind of wavy, keep them straight and clean. Left side rib laying on it's side is way skinnier than the top meaty rib on its side. Keep them proportionate. Top rib on the end of the row - I don't find that burnt crusty piece at the top of the picture on the end of the rib appetizing. Get rid of stuff like that. Fix all that and you get a 9 from me.

Some ribs look saucy, some look gooey. some look sticky and soem look like candy.

I overlook the dry edges as that is nice to see this placement and I will take a center rib for TT scoring.

THe picture is very good! What camera? I am not sure I get such a close look in a comp and I will say you probably waited over an hour before you took this pic.

I say it was a 9 an hour ago.

SCORE/REASONS FOR SCORE: 7 = Looks too dark, might just be the photo, but it lost its appetizing element for me. .The 2 end ribs are too different from the others.

SUGGESTIONS: Box would look better with a "brighter" green garnish like parsley. The greens used in this box just don't give this box a "POP" that catches judge's attention in a positive way. Don't put the 2 end ribs in the box as they are "extra"(already have 6 in the box) and they are too different from the rest.

Solid looking entry. Very nice. However, it has the appearance of being over-cooked and perhaps just a tad burned (upper left).

8 - Very Good

I can't put my finger on it, but this box is lacking something that the "9" boxes seem to have. Meat is very well presented, but seems "skimpy."

9, this really looks good

six---cuts are uneven--ribs on their side don't 'balance' each other---

Score 7
The top left rib kills your score. Its way out of size to the rest of the slab. also your entry at first looks like a meatloaf for some reason.
Color is really good. Change out that one rib and it turns it into a strong 8.

Your garnish frames the meat very well.

Overall, pretty average. Doesn't make me want to take a bite.

Positive...I like seeing the side of a rib bone, decent arrangement.

Negative...too dark, bones appear to be taken from different racks and possibly at least one end bone. Bottom left titled bone is thin while top right tilted bone is nice and thick.

Score 9. Looks great and I like the box layout. I know some judges are likely to score down as the meat is dark, but looking are the slices on the side the meat does not appear to be overcooked and this cook did not try to hide the actual color of the meat by oversaucing. Nice job.

Nice use of glaze, rib to rib not the perfect uniformity and that is the only think that kept me from giving a 9

8- They look really tasty, I like the color, and it is obvious that you put work into the presentation.

Suggestions: While the "ring'o'ribs" around the others is novel, when you show off that much cut side, you run the risk of the ribs drying out, or at least appearing to be dry. I think that may be the case here, and it didn't really gain you anything IMHO. Keep the bones as close together as possible to preserve heat and moisture.

8 Color is great, looks moist, amazing looking bark, apealling to the eye...would like to see you select a more uniform grouping for presentation

SCORE/REASONS= 8 / Nice box, just not excellent. Made me a little dizzy looking at it.

SUGGESTIONS= If your gonna display a side of a rib, make sure it is clean, not like the one in the top left corner. Your meat will lose heat being separated.

8. The 2 ribs laying on their side are different shape and look like they came off different racks. Could be pic but top one on its side looks like it needs sauce brushed out on it.

9 - `Makes me want to taste.

On the side note- I'm not one who penalizes a team because the ribs don't look "identical."

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
