Horrendous picture but seeing the side of the left rib, it looks perfectly cooked. looks like a mix-match on the front 3 ribs and the center one has top corner broken off.
Question: Is that a regulation size box or are these Brontasaurus ribs?

7 or 8

Bad lighting. Really cant tell, but what I do see, a solid 7. If lighting was more clear, most likely an 8, or possible 9.

The box looks rushed. Each rib looks like a different shape and size. Looks like it was through in the box and the 3 top ones are trying to cover up something that is wrong on the 3 bottom ones. But the biggest thing of all is the ribs are not cut evenly.

Suggestion: Know where you are cutting and have some type of guide. It looks like they were cutting away from them or that they are right handed and had the rack on its side and cutting from top to bottom.

SCORE/REASONS...7...left rib cut was very thin, biggest problem was the hunk of meat off the middle rib.

SUGGESTIONS...If a cook does not want to take the effort to cover his mistakes(the hunk out of the rib), too me, that's a don't care statement and I tend to take an extra hard look,oh well!

Nice sauced shine and a nice color. However the meat appears to be undercooked (appearance wise) and theh slicing of the ribs is all over the place and takes away from the overall appetizing appeal.

S/R, 8, solid, for some reason i just dont like the way the ribs are stacked.but the ribs look ready to eat.

8 I hate to give it an 8 instead of 9 but the pieces from this angle seem to be cut unevenly and there seems to be a few sauce spots on the lower rim of the the box that I feel could have been wiped off before closing and probably did not happen in transit. But they look really tasty.

Noel - When I judge at a live contest, I never take off points for a spot or two of sauce on the box. Why? I prefer to side with the cook on issues like this. We just don't know if this was a result of transportation to the table or not.

You are very correct in suggesting the cook wipe off the edges before closing the lid (and I don't know if they did that to this box or not). Glad you brought this issue up.

Bottom line cooks: Judges may, indeed, count off for it. Watch those drippings! :-)

??? - Is that a sandwhich sized box?

Judging meat only - 6

Uneven and washed out.

5 bones of = size and one much smaller, asymetric bone placement, overall image of untidiness.

Not the most attractive rib placement, but the ribs themselves look moist and tender. initial reaction is "yea, let me try those"!

7. Tough to see the color from the angle and reflection. Cuts don't look straight and clean. The shortness of the middle front rib and all the space between the ribs is a distraction.

Sorry, I can't judge this box. There's too much glare from the sauce and that camera angle is not allowing a full view. I'd suggest cleaning the edges of the box though.

Score 7. The uneven cuts, heavy coating of sauce, and pepper or whatever in the sauce makes these ribs less appealling. Just no wow factor here.

Score = 7
Reason = Just missing any WOW factor for me. No 2 ribs look like they came from the same rack. Poor photo color doesn't help either.
Suggestion = Parsley would brighten up the box and make the meat look more appealing. Having the ribs look similar will help too.

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
