6---rough cuts,uneven sizes--may taste great but----

Solid 7 = Average

Cuts look a bit ragged. Color is OK, not bad and not great. Some ribs look dry and borderline overcooked but there is also something telling me these might taste very good. Average is what I come up with.

Score 7. Ribs look only average. No WOW factor here. They look to have been cut very close to the bone and with a dull knife as the edges look rough and in the picture (might be the picture) it looks like I am seeing bone and not meat. Consider cutting making " the judges cut" with a good knife.

Looks way overdone and dry. Cuts ragged. 2nd rib from top has big chunk missing from it. These look ready to fall apart

Generous 6. These ribs weren't cut cleanly, looks like the ribs were cut with a chainsaw. Get a sharp knife. Big chunk of meat missing from the side in the second down from the top and the bottom rib. The ribs look like they are way overcooked, and that bottom rib has way more pull back from the bone than the rest of the ribs - you need to hide that or don't put it in the box at all. Color is a little too dark for me.

I see we aren't judging this one straight on the way the real judges would be. How about NO SIDE VIEW PICTURES? Isn't there some way form the forum moderator to flip them around before posting them?

Score: 8

Looks like they were cut with a dull knife and each rib is full of debris. Size of the top 3 are nice but the bottom 3 do not match up with the top 3. The bottom rib kills me because of the long bone that is sticking out. Everytime I look at the box my eyes go right to that one.

Suggestions: Yes very sharp knife to cut. Replace bottom 3 ribs and make sure bone is not exposed like the bottom one.

6, perhaps 7

They look average, something you'd find at an average back yard cookout (not cookoff, but a cookout). It definitely doesn't scream "must eat me now". The cuts are rough and jagged. It appears as though the meat is both dry and falling apart. Could be the photo, but the bark looks VERY dark.

Well, that bottom bone keeps drawing my eye away from the rest, and not in a good way. From here the meat looks a bit dry, as does the outside of the ribs. I like the color of the outside. The slices weren't made cleanly, so there's a bit of raggedness to them you could easily overcome. Four of the six ribs are matched pretty well, the fourth from the top sticks out, but that bottom bone...what a detractor. If you can, cook an extra rack of ribs so you have more to choose from. That one's just out of place and doesn't belong in this box. I'm sorry but I'd have to go with a six here. Maybe a seven if it looked better in person.

just 2 suggestions. Show the part of the meat that looks the best. In this case the top with the sauce and not the inside of the slice. Arrange the ribs uniformly so that the exposed bones are all facing the same direction. A feww minor changes would make this box much more appealing, IMHO.

7 Nice bark, attractive placement/arrangement
problems with 1st and 5th rib (a little mangled at the edge..could have made cleaner cuts)

6 - Nothing special here. The cuts are ragged and I see some strange looking little chunks on the outside of several. Bottom rib looks to be missing a piece of meat. They also look dry.

cbj/comp cook, I'd give it a 8 the meat looks good but the sauce looks a little uneven.

I would score this an 7; looks appetizing, but the cuts are jagged, see more bone on the side in your 2nd rib from the top; most are uniform in size, but need to work on the slicing them up, might be a little dry if they are rough like that... but I would love to taste them!

7

Slices look pretty ragged, saucing looks odd...maybe the rack was sliced sauce side up? The presentation highlights the sharpness or dullness of the slices. In this case it's the latter. Clean up the slices, smooth out the sauce and this jumps to 8 .

Score is a 7.
Ribs are cut uneven, one looks like a bite is missing, ribs are a little out of place (could be from box movement)

Just doesn't have that pop for a 9. Was actually going for a 7, but looks pretty appetizing to me.

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
