These do look tasty but uneven sizes, gloppy sauce and haphazard arrangement must detract from appearance score.
One suggestion: strain some of the spice seeds from your sauce

Wouldn't change a thing - looks yummy

6---nothing looks particularly appetizing---

a little care in slicing and presenting would help--it is a good idea to display more meat then greens in the 9x9--imo anyway

Score: 5 (maybe 6 in person because of bad lighting in pic)
Hope not to harsh but good thing about this website is it helps you improve for the next comp.

Few things here I have taken off for.

1) The way the ribs are cut. None of them are cut the same size and you can really notice the first two on the bottom have crooked cuts. One end of the bone has a lot of meat and the other side does not. Just beaware when you are cutting and in relation to the bone.

2) The rib on the far left looks like it has pooling of sauce or grease/jucies coming out of it. Be sure to let your meat rest before cutting and to brush your sauce out.

3) Placement in the box. I like what you were trying to do but appears the ribs have already settled in the box and you most likely have not even transported them yet. It almost looks like there was no care in placing them in the box as the top one has settled down in the garnish and the one below it is almost turned on its side and the one below it is laying flat. I suggest using a little more care in placing them in the box and maybe building your garnish in places so each bone does not settle or turn on you.

7 - The sauce looks like it has white grains of something in it, kind of lumpy and unappetizing.

7 un-uniform pieces, sauce looks a little thick in spots

very nice. Appetizing. A little work on possitioning of the ribs is all I might suggest.

6 Nothing pops looking at this box. Uneven cuts and goobers on most ribs.

Score 7. The ribs are oversauced and it appears to have been done due to overcooking, but we will really know that during our taste and tenderness tests, I don't like this box layout and the ribs just aren't appealling.

There a some hotspots and refelctions in the photo making it hard to really "see" the ribs, but I am giving the cook benefit of the doubt. Nice looking ribs, but could be cut lengthwise more parallel to the bone. Simple but effective presentation that would let you easily see the sides of the ribs.

This looks appetizing to me, I'd give this box an 8; ribs are placed interestingly; the top rib has a mar on the cut, and the rib below it appears smaller than the rest; could be the pic; color is good, they don't appear to be dry, knife appears to have been pretty sharp.

Good looking ribs. The photo is tinted a little toward the magenta but they appear to be moist. I'd look forward to diving in head first there.

The only suggestions I could offer would be to consider going a little lighter on the sauce, try for more uniformity in the cuts and keep that knife sharp to make sure it goes through the bark and doesn't leave any ragged edges (not always easy, I know).

6. A little dark. Ribs are cut crooked (wider at one end than the other). The spacing between the ribs is not consistent. The arrangement has me focusing on all the lettuce rather than all the meat. No real "pop" to this box.

I give this box a 7. Ribs look tastey but are not uniformly arranged or cut. Not bad but not outstanding for me either.

Score = 7
Reason = Just doesn't look all that appetizing. Dark, sauce is kinda gloppy, sides look rather dry.
Suggestion = Use parsley or something lighter for garnish so that it helps give the meat more attractiveness; take more care in placement of the ribs - looks kinda junky.

7.....Very uneven cuts, meat has sauce spots and box looks sparse

cbj/comp cook, i give it a 7 maybe 8 in person, the ribs are cut uneven and the sauce is a little uneven it looks like too.

score: 6
reason: uneven cuts, sauce is pooled on two of the ribs, just does not look good

High 7 / low 8. Love the color and the selected ribs are nice and meaty. I'd look forward to chomping into mine. I'd give down-checks for wedge cuts - try for rectangular pieces. Also, what looks like pepper seeds detract from uniformity. While not ragged by any means, the cuts could have been a little cleaner. Nice wibs.

7 - above average

Fairly nice looking ribs. Spreading them apart like this I am concerned if they're cold by the time I bite in to them. The one rib looks oily or watery. Color is appetizing, but not rockin' by any stretch. Are there bubbles on the BBQ? I dont know, but whatever it is, it's taking away from the appearance. Not terrible, but not rockin' either.

I can't really judge this, the picture is so awful Blue sauce? Really? Kind of a haphazard arrangement is all I can say.

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
