6. Just an average box here. Way too much green showing - this isn't a lettuce contest, it is a meat contest. Put some meat in the box. Side view only highlights the fact that 3 ribs are meaty and 3 ribs are skinny. The box is put together with no real balance - like the large green space in the upper right corner.

Would have been higher, but I didn't care for the display

Score: 6

Not all pieces are uniformed. Three in middle are nice size but one on far left and the two on top and bottom look like different sizes. You have a neat placement going on but everything needs to be moved up toward top right a bit because the rib on the far left corner looks like if fell down in a hole and the side of the box is holding it up. The ribs have to much sauce or grease (possible DQ because rib in middle second from left looks like chunk is larger than 1/8). Also the bark of the ribs look burnt.

5 - The box needs to be filled up. Displaying the ribs on their side makes it look only half full. I can't see what the outside color is at all and one of the ribs is showing bone on the side.

looks very tasty and a refreshing presentation

The top rib is way thin compared to the others. The amount of juice that has been put on these makes me think they are probably dry without it. Although it's nice to get at least a partial side view We can't see the top side at all and the spacing of these increases the chance of 'em being cold by the time they are judged

7- The outsides look burnt, and the sauce looks kind of uneven.

I'd give it a 9. Looks great!

8 - Very good.

When I look at entries which are unusual in some way, I have to remind myself "it is a meat contest." Focusing on the meat, I am left with the thought that I'd really like to try these ribs. The outside of the ribs do have a burnt appearance, and thus the deduction.

The arrangement of the box has a "lopsided" appearance and does not help it any way. For those judges strongly influenced by arrangement/garnish, this box would likely score lower.

Looks appetizing. The 3 ribs in the center are much nicer than the side 3. Would be nice if they were all the same. I really don't like the ribs being placed on their sides. I think a stronger look is to place bark up.

I would score this a 7. The ribs look good and meaty and I like the way the meat has pulled back from the bone. First I would like to see at least a couple of the ribs from the top instead of on their side. Also, I'm not sure about the sauce on the side of the ribs. I would like to see just the meat and it's smoky greatness.

8--Would be a 9 except for all the little goobers all over. I would surely want to taste some!

DQ -Chunks in the sauce larger than 1/8 inch.

The light conditions don't allow for a very accurate presentation score, however I Would like to see the rib's more symmetricall in box , at the angle It appears maybe your hiding something. The sauce/mop that was applied before putting in Box I could have done without, score 6

Score 7. This box just not look appealling to me. I think it is because the lack of contrast and not being able to see the color on the top of the ribs. My suggestion to improve the box would be to consider using parsley instead of lettuce (darker color which will highlight the meat more) add a few more ribs ( this will balance the box better) and only turn one or two ribs on the side ( this will show the meat better and add color to the box).

Laying ribs on their sides does not allow a picture of them to give me enough information to judge their appearance. The ribs look fat, juicy, and uniform on one side, but I won't rate them, sorry.

Not sure what to do here, they look good, but is this sculputred meat?

Jean K KCBS CBJ

I would give this a 6, for placement; I can't really see the meat that well, other than the side; I would recommend placing them upright; I can't see if the size is uniform, what the bark looks like; from this point, the bones are very curved.

Randy Stewart

Score: 7 This is an interesting arrangement and somewhat appealing but the ribs are not uniformly cut and I can't see the color of bark to determine consistency. It appears that butter or some other sauce has been applied to the meat to make it look juicy. Too much of the rib is hidden.

Chaz D KCBS CBJ

a generous 7
The ribs are all different shapes and sizes and they have obviously been sprayed with juice to the point of looking almost greasy instead of moist. That left rib looks like its about to fall out. A good idea for arrangement but it needs to be executed better.

Very bold presentation. I can't see the cookers cutting skills...why hide all the tops? Is something being hidden? Too much negative space.

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
