9 with possible dryness caveat
Like yesterdays pork box, this picture is taken in the shade making it a tad dark but mainly making it tough to tell if the exposed rib side is dry or not. We'll side for the team and assume it's OK making this a 9. Do I like it as much as yesterdays ribs? No. Do they look excellent? Yes and that's a 9
If seen in person and the top rib looked overdone and dry, this could be a 6 or 7. The nice color leads me to think these are done just right despite the shadow

Score: 7

Dont like how the meat is stained on the top rib turned on its side. Could be lighting in pic but the middle rib looks like it has a big glob of sauce. No WOW factor in this box but its a solid 7.

would be nine if the top rib was neat

7. No real "pop" or wow factor to the box, ribs are kind of dull - no shine. Above average.

Exceptional. I really like the layout especially the rib on its side showing how well the fat rendered. Good saucing. Nice. Color.

The only thing I would change is the order of the bones. I liked to see them all from the same rack, lined up as the were in that rack.

As a side note, you might want to to on the garnish framing the meat. We aren't supposed to judge garnish but it could affect your scores.

Overall, great box. Wish it was mine.

9. A very good looking box. Not too much parsley. Ribs all even in size and color.

Looks pretty much like most rib entries. No WOW factor for me. First impression was that they looked a bit dry.

While I am not a big fan of red powder looks or adding red colors to a nice red smoked meat this looks just fine and tasty and I want to try it.

I would score this an eight.

While I am sure there are those that will nit pick this entry, I do not believe in doing that.

The reason I didn't give it a nine was because of the sauce on the presented side of the top rib.

What you might do to improve your score is to make a deeper parsley bed so that the meat is pushed up higher in the box. I also think that you would score better if you made 2 rows of bones facing the same way. It would also not hurt to put 8 bones in at the same time. Aligning the bones parallel with the box wouldn't hurt either.

8- These look great, although the one on top appears smaller than the rest, poor judge; color, cut all look enticing!

I'd give it an 8. Fairly good overall.

Dick - CBJ

Score 8. A little less sauce covering the ribs and a little more care in the placement of the ribs in the box and on the garnish and it would be a nine.

9 - Looks great! However, I'm curious about the lack of shrinkage as there doesn't appear to any bone showing but that's done on another test.

Benefit of doubt going to cook/team. Splotchy sauce on the side of the one rib, otherwise very nice. Doesn't take enough away to drop it to an 8 though.

Well done.

9. Without hesitation. The cuts could be a bit straighter but then it starts looking almost fake. This is what a box should look like.

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
