Score: 7

No WOW factor here. First thing I see is that the ribs are not the same size, each one appears to be different and not uniform. The end piece on the far right does not even come close to matching. They do have a nice shine to them.

7 maybe 6
Both end ribs are just too black to go higher. If they all looked like the 2 center ones, this is an easy 8, maybe a 9

Score: 8+. Sauce is a bit heavy-handed, otherwise it would be a 9. Color is wonderful, the ribs look juicy and well-cooked. Can just about smell the smoky goodness! Good job!

I'd give it an 8. Looks like a little too much sauce in the picture.

Just a bit too much garnish. Some of the meat gets lost. Very nice looking meat tho.

R = Excellent looking ribs. Perfect? No but pretty close. I would jump at the chance to sample these.

S = Cuts could be more uneven and placement in the container could be less staggered -- but these are very minor quibbles on some fine looking ribs. Seriously, I want these for lunch today.

8 - Too much sauce.

Dick - CBJ

Score 8. The ribs are buried in the garnish, The sauce is painted on and I would like to see one rib placed on the side especially since all I see is a dark meat covered with a dark sauce.

7, no 8, no 7, yeah really 7, but maybe 8... benefit of doubt going to cook, it's an 8

Ordinarily I wouldn't even say anything about the greenery, but in this case those bushes need to be trimmed back because they're overtaking the meat. Seriously, it's start to cover the meat. Also some of the sauce appears too thick for my discerning and delicate palate. :-)

Otherwise, very nice color and attractive meat.

8+. good looking rib box. very left rib might be a little short and dark, and if I got that rib as a judge I might be a little disapointed.

A little bit hard to see the meat, and the cuts don't seem to be from the same rack at all

I want to go 7 as I do not like the presentation but I will score this an 8 (Very Good) and err for the cook in this case

The excellent color and appearance of being perfectly cooked trumps some inconsistency in the size/shape of each rib...bonus was that I think these might all be from one slab and I find that natural look appealing

Score 9 - Perfect looking box, great color on ribs, cuts are clean, uniform placement, delicious looking. Very well done.

9 - the color is good, ribs are uniform in size, appear to be moist, cuts are straight; would cut back on the sauce just a bit, but looks good to me!

Not a judge but those look awesome. Definitely a 9

8-

A little too dark in some areas and bones are different lengths detecting from the symmetry. Saucing looks nice and ribs look meaty. Overall pretty good but missing that wow factor.

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
