Ignore the foil, really? Now you're testing us to see if we're reading. ;-)

I'd give it a 7. The ribs look moist and have a good color but there was no time given to the presentation.

Ribs look okay but don't say "wow." Other than the top rib, I couldn't see the end of the rib bone, which made me wonder if they were going to be tough. I know that didn't mean they would be, but I couldn't help but wonder.

Beautiful, Exquisite!! Am I limited to 9? This is a beautiful presentation. Screw the beautifully trimmed parsley, cilantro (whatever) garnish, this is exquisite, I want them all, it looks delicious. This contest is about meat, after all, and this meat makes me want to dive in.Pure perfection, definitely a 9.

Getting past the point that this would be DQd because of the lack of box and the foil..

Ribs look good, moist and meaty. No real special presentation.

Big, meaty ribs. Dry rub gives the bark what appears to be good texture. I really want to take a bite...refreshing to see no sauce.

Great looking bbq that makes me hungry...that's what good food looks like.

Nice color; good lookin' ribs! What time do we eat?

Score: 8

I am sure the color is better in person. I have to say each ribs is evenly and beautifully cut. Not to much sauce but top of them look moist.

I've found this to be true with my own barbecue, but when I show it with foil showing it tends to accent/reflect more of the brown in it and it looks lifeless/dead. Without foil, whether with or without garnish, the redder colors are accented/reflected; same barbecue; different look.

These are brown, VERY brown, and dont really jump out and say "eat me".

Score 6, they look a little undercooked, nice back, but need some sauce

s/r 6/7, these do not look very appetizing to me.ribs look dry and not juicey. i dont think i would buy these ribs at a store.

Nice meaty ribs that look appetizing, however the overall presentation is lacking organization and a wow factor.

Herb said to ignore the foil.
I'm assuming there's another rib under the one on top.
8 maybe 9 in person. the grainy coating has me wondering.

These are nice looking, uniform ribs with some nice bark. But -- and this could be the photo -- I can't help but wonder if I would get more "burned" flavor than "smoky" flavor here. Either way they do appear to be above average and I'd like to give them a try.

Score 8. This picture makes this box very hard to judge. The sauce with all of the additions (?) is a distraction and the reason I scored it a 8. If this box was set-up correctly and I was able to actually view the box it could be a nine. I certainly would like to try the ribs, maybe being March and a few months since our last contest I might just want some good BBQ.

I'm glad we are not supposed to DQ this.
9 for me
Good color, thick and meaty, look juicy and not overdone. I like stuff without any sauce and I'd love to try these.
Suggestions: Don't put foil in your box!!

BBQ editor: These were of course DQ'd weren't they?

Randy Stewart KCBS CBJ

Score: 7 - Ribs are cut well, but not placed in the box very orderly. They look big and meaty which I like. However, their color makes me think that they might be overdone.

GONG GONG the ribs look great but they blew it with the aluminum looking garnish
gotta be a 1

6. Kind of dull looking.

These ribs look awesome! Shame this box is illegal. So, its prolly a 0 depending on the captains ruling.

BBQ Critic

Chaz - There is no "0" score. It would be scored a "1" for a DQ if this box had been a turn in at a KCBS contest. This box, however, did not compete in a KCBS sanctioned event - so the use of foil was allowed. :-)

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
