Score: 7 - Garnish is hiding the ribs too much. Ribs look unevenly cut but hard to tell for sure. Color of the ribs look okay from what I can tell. Placement in box has some order but could be done better.

5 maybe 6
Wish this picture would enlarge so I could get a decent look at the ribs. (got smaller when clicked on) As seen, there is just no way to score this higher.
Suggestion: Get the darned garnish out from between your ribs!!!
It's a meat competition. That garnish will chill the ribs before they are tasted.

Presentation hides a lot of what appear to be good looking ribs.

7 maybe 8 in person.

7
Blurry pic but looks like your trying to hide the meat.
If you took out those three divider leafs and a better close up from an angle not straight down on the box it might go to a 9. I like the natural color. just hard to judge.

6 - It's a meat contest, and I'm having a hard time seeing the meat.

7 - Above average

Meat - looks like a "cheescloth" pattern on the ribs.

Garnish and Arrangement - the garnish is taking over the box. Arrangement is unusual and not complimentary. The garnish "poking" through the slices is distracting at best.

Score: 7
Not a good picture at all. Hard to tell if the product is done properly from this photo and layout.

Suggestion to the cook:
Let the meat do the talking! The use of overwhelming amounts of garnish doesn't do anything to enhance the box; in fact, it detracts from it because it hides your product.

Score: 7

Gave you a 7 because it appears you put thought into it the presentation. Would have given you a 6 because ribs are not the same size. Some of them are small and like like beef short ribs. They do appear to have nice color to them.

Suggestion: Kind of like the pattern you were trying to lay them out in but that is way to much garnish. Dont like the garnish in between the ribs is taller than the rib. It kind of gives the impression of ribs sitting in middle of growing lettuce patch. So work on the size of ribs being all the same size and not so much lettuce in between them and you are look at an 8 possible 9.

Not attractive at all. The meat is buried in garnish

6 - The garnish hides the meat. Not a fan of this layout.

7

This could get a higher number but I just can't tell because it's camouflaged in garnish, but what I can see looks good.

My guess is the middle two ribs are very tasty since the lettuce is eating those bones. Make the meat sit up-on, not down-in the garnish for a better presentation.

5 or 6, I would like to judge the meat but can not due to the greens overtaking the meat. From what I can see is average at best.

6, not a good look for ribs

Smitty - KCBS CBJ

6 maybe. Not a fan of greenery in between the ribs, not a fan of the greenery eating up the ribs. Can't see the meat. If you think the box looks good from that angle, and looks like crap from the front, maybe you need to arrange your ribs differently - or take your picture from the front.

cbj/comp cook, 7 too much green I cant get a good view of the meat.

Very hard to see the meat; that green stuff is literally in the way. Then they appear smallish and shriveled up. Could be the picture. Perhaps as high as a 7 in real life, but the way it looks in the pic it doesn't say "thou must eat me right now".

Looks like the garnish is swallowing the ribs!
Doesn't look like much time or effort was put into this box.

Picture needs to be closer, but first glance I would give it a 7; ribs look small, short, can't really see the meat that well; alot of lettuce... if I could see the meat, sides, I could add more comment.

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
