9, At first glance, I thought there were only four bones in the box. Very nice glaze overall, looks very appetizing. I like the way the darker parsley contrasts the color of the ribs, really makes them pop out at you and focuses your attention on those ribs. Excellent use of the garnish to achieve your overall appearance.

Would like to see the side of the rib - and since I would be able to in competition I'm giving benefit of the doubt to the cook

Score: 7
Ribs look like they might be done well, but they're so over-sauced that it's hard to see the meat. The box is laid out nicely tho.

Make sure you always have 6 pieces... seems to be alot of sauce and ribs look thin, not meaty; would give this a 6; ribs just seem too thin, not meaty;

9 Even with the Black UFO on one rib. Hopefully, it's not a DQ.

Only 4 Ribs? Was this a small contest where the cooks were told to only place 4 ribs in the box or is this cook uniformed? If this is a entry that is to be scored I would give it a score of 6. The ribs are so OVER sauced that I cannot see the meat or even the bones. I will never give a entry a score above a seven when the cook buries tne meat on sauce. This is a BBQ meat contest. NOT a BBQ sauce contest.

7. Above average. Looks a little too heavy on the sauce. Make sure your cuts are clean. A lot of greenery staring out of the box. With that much green and space between ribs, you could have pushed them together and put 2 more ribs in, 2 rows of 5. Remember, it's a meat contest.

If you'd like to get the most out of this site, you need to take a picture from the front and down on the box like the judges will see at a judging table.

Score 8

I like the color on the ribs and they look delicious. Nice even cuts.

Only see 4 ribs, but other 2-4 could be hidden beneath (otherwise it should be a DQ).
Looks too drenched in sauce. Is this a meat contest or a sauce contest - I know, we are to judge it as presented by the cook - therefore, not excellent, but pretty good.

Score: 8 - placed well in the box, uniform cuts, a little too much sauce so took a point off for that. At first, thought it had only 4 pieces in the box until I saw the others underneath. Nice looking box.

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
