Score: 8 - Nice bark color, uniform cuts, good placement in the box, garnish hides the ribs a little (picky), can't see side of rib to tell how it might be cooked. Nice looking box.

Score 6. Way to dark to score any higher. At the resturant -- return to the kitchen and ask for some properly cooked, unburnt food. I would have no interest in these ribs.

7, pretty dark

I'd give it a 7. Maybe it's the picture but they look pretty dark, almost burnt.

Score: 6
The ribs are really hard to see properly due to the poor photo, but look very dark and oversauced.

Good straight cuts, nice uniform shape. Meat looks a little dark but giving the benefit of the doubt here due to lighting issues.

Note..might want to clean up the garnish in the future so it doesn't overlap the bones. It gives the box an untidy look which, right or wrong, may detract from the overall score.

8.. mabye 9 in person. Nice pull back. Nice color.
Suggestion would be to have one of the ribs sidways such that the judges and see the profile of a rib. This would also give the appearence of being a bit less stuffed in the box.

I know the pic does not do it justice but I think the ribs would still have the charred look to them. Few other reasons I do not like them is they are not cut evenly at a straghit angle. Some have exposed bones on the end and some dont.

Comment: You garnish looks fresh but the way its placed in the box looks like a mess. Top of the box its coming out of it wildly and the bottom and left side its sparse.

S/r,6/7, cant really tell if it burnt or just over sauced w/some very dark sauce..

The ribs look a little over done. It may just be the pic, I would score the box an 7.

Maybe it's the photo - but that's WAY to dark for my liking. Looks burnt.

Score -6

The ribs look burnt and dry. The ends of the bone looked Burt wich leads me to think they are going to be dry. Maybe it is the photo.

I hate that there is so little light on these ribs but from what I can tell in the dark they look first rate. I like that we can see some bone and the cuts are pretty even and clean. I reserve the right to change my score if they are overcharred but in this dark pick these ribs look excellent.

7 = Above Average
Way too dark even if the pic was better it looks like the glaze is burnt...the box also looks "sloppy" to me and that is not appealing

Jim/CBJ - SBN/KCBS/SCBA

8 - The ribs are uniform in size and appear to be done to a good, tender consistency (based only on the obvious protrusion of the bones). However, they are not placed in the box squarely, and they look like they could be burned on top, but that's probably a light issue.

6. Looks like the sugar in the rub burnt, might be overdone. Way too dark.

I can't tell if those are burnt or just dark so I'll give you the benefit of the doubt on color, even though they look a bit dry at the exposed bone end. They're not pretty ribs, but I'd have to see them closer to really tell. I'll give them a seven. Recommend you use less sugar and/or cooking time; they'd come out a little better, IMO.

I would say a 7, could be the picture, but color looks pretty dark; can't really see the meat, but box appears to be full; would like to see a side view of the ribs, see how meat they are; size appears to be uniform.

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
