8 - Wouldn't mind seeing some uniformity in size. Still they look very good and I like getting to see the side view on a couple.

8 (maybe a 9 in person - the pic is dark). From what I can tell - they look good

Looks nicely cooked maybe a little under done, looks juicy and tender. Bad uneven knify cuts earn it a 7

How did you close the lid? I am sure there are more than 5 bones in that box or I would DQ. But I can only identify CLEARLY 5. In person perhaps better.

I'm hoping it's just the lighting but these look like they have been soaked in red wine to me way to dark for my taste.. Would go no more than 6 or 6.5..

I'm not familiar with this lettuce, but the dark color may be my monitor. The meat looks like it might be under cooked.

7. Regrettably, this has a hodge-podge appearance to me. The 2nd, 3rd & 4th ribs were very awkwardly sliced. The first (left-most) and 6th ribs appear to have been placed "just to get them into the box, no matter what."

cbj/comp cook, 8 or 9 I'd have to see it in person to be sure.looks good,a different style of presentation...i like it.

Score: 7 - Ribs are cut uneven, not placed in the box very uniformly, and look a little underdone (may be the pic or light). Color is nice and there's not too much sauce.

Dick - CBJ

Score 9. Excellent looking ribs.

Kendall - CBJ

I'd give it a 7. The presentation looks kind of haphazard.

six--while the ribs look actually pretty good think they were thrown in the box or some such

That box doesn;t look like it would close. Box doesnt look presentable for a competition setting by any means. My score is 6

One of the worst pictures yet but benefit of the doubt to the team. these look juicy and not oversauced. Could easily be a 9 in person.
Is that garnish lettuce?

I thought there were only 5 pieces until a closer look. Looks a little sloppy

Tough picture to fully see this. It appears the arrangement is a bit disheveled.
Meat looks great.
7.. likely an 8 in person.
Photo is pretty dark to see clearly. Couldn't seem to enlarge it to give myself a better view.

Maybe the box got jostled a bit in transport, but it looks like the ribs were just thrown in, which decreases how appetizing they look

DARK photo doesn't help the scoring process, but there are several things that I can see that could be better. Ribs look thrown into the box without much care about arranging them for maximum appearance. Cuts appear to be uneven. Sizes are too dissimilar. And the garnish doesn't do ANYTHING to help the appearance of the meat! VERY distracting!

Jim Harmon - CBJ KCBS/SBN/SCBA

7 - The garnish takes away from the presentation of the ribs. I presume that the ribs on the outside are turned up so the meat can be observed, but it makes the presentation look sloppy.

9 - Glad to see a box of challenges like this. Ribs look great and I want the whole box. I can't wait to see how many DQs are presented here. The garnish is actually Chinese Kale which is allowed. See site below!!!

The cook said this is Romaine Lettuce.

6-7. Cuts are not straight. The ribs look like they were just thrown in the box. Far left rib is a lot smaller than the others.

Suggestion - the garnish is excessive and does not enhance the appearance of the meat.

6...uneven cuts, uneven sauce, just does not look appitizing

The photo is so dark that it is hard to tell, but I do hope that the garnish used is not kale or this entry would have to be DQ'd. A little more care could have been taken with the placement of the ribs in the box as well- I'm giving the benefit of the doubt, but it's not clear whether there are even enough ribs in this entrant's box.

Larry CBJ/KCBS/GBA

OMG !!! I had my wires crossed!!! The box is a DQ and gets a 1 for improper garnish. `Had a Senior moment, I guess???? DAMFINO!!

This pic is so bad it's hard to even call this one. Ignoring the bizarre color the cuts are very uneven and the sizes vary a good deal too. So, a 7 I think....

I gave you a 7 because not very good pic. I did take off for the different size of ribs and they are unevenly cut.

Comment: What kind of garnish did you use? It almost looks like collard or turnip greens but it could be the lightning of the pic.

Looks baked, frankly. Slices not even close to straight. Appears as though they've been dumped into the box.

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
