As a suggestion, using chopped chicken in the bottom of the box will hide a multitude of problems if you are not going to use garnish.

however, meat look great. 8, maybe 9 in person.

The skin on the top center piece just looks raw. I know it's not but it doesn't look good. If this all looked like the top right piece this would be an easy 9. There is juice with some sauce in it coming out from under the front left pieces. I most certainly would not consider that pooled sauce. It's just juicy goodness.

Score 7 Nothing really outstanding, but refreshing to see a box of meat. I would want to encourage this cooker to continue cooking, learn what wins and I am curious about the taste of this chicken.

Score: 8 - Color and trim looks good, placement looks a little jammed in which took away from the overall appearance for me.

7 - While I don't like too much sauce this looks a little under sauced or is that rub added after cooking?

5 - this one just doesn't do it for me. Color, shapes, and sizes are uneven. Not an appetizing box.

David/CBJ

7, maybe an 8 in person. Nothing pops with this entry with me. Pieces do look moist, but just not very appetizing. Struggled with whether to deduct for the gelatinous poolings, and decided to because that is one of the things with this entry that make it not very appetizing. No deductions for lack of garnish and smudges on sides of container - garnish not mandatory and smudges could have happened at turn-in.

I like it when cooks do not mess with garnish. But to pull it off the meat must look REAl good. To me this does not look REAL good. I would have to score this one a 7.

8 - A little attention to detail would get a 9. Neater arrangement and centered in the box.

That chicken juice lets me know it'll be good!!!

DQ-sauce pooling. If not a DQ in the Reps opinion-7. Uneven color and size of the pieces.

Score 7. This entry just lacks any real appeal for me.

8 I love the absence of distracting garnish! Color is a bit pale and uneven, sizing is inconsistant, I enjoy the "chicken is the headliner" look

9 - The chicken looks excellent.

Takes some B#$%'s to put chicken in the box without greens but this team pulled it off..

8. be a 9 if the juices were coverd up. Maybe move the chicken towards the bottom of the box so you don't see the juice.

Pretty clearly not on par with others. Pale, saucing and sizing issues. A good effort though.

Another box with chicken pieces that are too dissimilar to be excellent. Otherwise, this looks great.

Score: 8
This is some really good lookin' chicken, but my eye is drawn to the glop of glaze/sauce on the lower left. This doesn't appear to be intentional pooling, but it is distracting. Could also be that it happened after the cook released it, so no point deduction- just sayin'.

8 - Chicken looks good. Has a nice color and not too much sauce. Just need a little more work on the presentation to get it up to a 9.

Fighting the "don't judge the greens..." big time here, was gonna throw an 8, but the meat looks VERY appetizing. The little drip of sauce lower left would also be very well hidden by a garnish - but it's not "pooled sauce" at all. In fact it shows by sight just how juicy these will be!

8. Nice bpx, but if you're going to trim that hard, trim them the same. And there's a lot of unused space in that box. I ignored the smudges on the insides of the box, they could have happened in handling.

8. Could be the lighting, but the outside right pieces appear much darker than the top middle piece. Looks juicy; I'd like a piece.

All registered judges are required add their email to the email form field. Emails are kept private and not published. If you do not list your email, your score/post will not appear on the site.

SCORE/REASONS FOR SCORE: Score this entry and give reasons for your score. DO NOT mention garnish or smoke rings in your reasons for scoring. We judge meat only.

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
