6 or 7. The bark pieces look great. The "meat" pieces look dry, except perhaps for the center piece. The box seems simply thrown together. Wonder if they were pressed for making the turn-in deadline.

Would score this box an 8...

Looks like it was thrown in the box

Lacks anything to make it stand out. Six chunks mostly meat with a little bark and four chunks with bark and almost no meat. I just hope I'm one of the first four to attack this box to try both. Doesn't appear that too much care was put into the arrangement of the box.

8. Meat looks moist, bark looks good. However, arrangement and the strands of meat detract from appearance.

looks a little over cooked from picture but that isn't fair I guess

score 7

Score 9 I love the burned ends and think it would pull easily.

7 - A little more attention needs to paid to the presentation of this box. It looks like the meat was just thrown in the box. That and the lack of sauce just doesn't make it as appetizing to me.

I give the box a 7. Meat looks pretty good with nice dark ends, but you may want to put a little more attention to slicing the tips so the pieces look even and presentable.

8 - Love the bark. Love the grain. Wish it wasn't so haphazardly tossed in the box.

the meat looks appetizing in and of itself, but the box looks like there was no thought to piece placement

Meat looks moist. Nice bark. Chunks all about the same size. More attention to the arrangement would have made it a nine. 8

7=above average

Presentation killed this for me...looks carelessly tossed in box

7 meat looks good but not much effort in presentation

9 I like the natural look, just pulled pork! Plain and simple

7. Pork looks moist, but disorganized. Better than average.

Looks like it was thrown in the box with no organization. Bark looks pretty good, but overall pretty average.

Doug KCBS/CBJ CTC

Kind of looks like the chunks were just thrown in there. Would look more appetizing if they were better arranged. The bark has a nice color to it, but he meat looks a little dry in spots. I'd give this box a 7.

8 could be 9 in person
Stuff looks good. Could use more care in arrangement. Would be nice if there were 6 pieces with massive bark instead of just 4

No real creativity here. Meat looks tasty. No Sauce!!!
7, maybe 8 in person.

This box looks very random, prepared without much forethought. The product appears dry. There is a nice bark, however which is appealing at least to my eye. The two toned garnish is a distraction and doesn't contribute much to the initial visual impact despite the fact that this is a meat contest

Dry + box placement i.e. meat is escaping! This might have happened during transport, but the cook can prevent it.

Mike CBJ KCBS

9, looks good and moist, nice bark, I would like to see a little sauce, but its not required and this looks good.

Deb/KCBS/CBJ

Score: 8
I'm giving the cook the benefit of the doubt here- While the meat looks really good, the box is very haphazard looking; sort of like the cook just tossed the pieces in. (Maybe a novice at competition cooking? Or just got in a hurry.) If there had been a little more care given to the presentation, this would have been a 9 for Appearance.

Score 8. I know it's pulled pork, but it is not necessary to place the raged pieces in the box. It distracts from the other great pieces. I would also place a little more pork into the box to cover the garnish.

FROSTBUSTER BBQ JUDGES "Appearance" Scores:8,8,8,8,8,8

BBQ Critic and Frostbuster judges both take issue with meat placement. A BBQ Critic judge said, "More attention to the arrangement would have made it a nine." A Frostbuster judge said, "Carelessly placed meat" and "needs a smoother presentation."

Take note cooks. The scores clearly reflect a problem here.

All registered judges are required add their email to the email form field. Emails are kept private and not published. If you do not list your email, your score/post will not appear on the site.

SCORE/REASONS FOR SCORE: Score this entry and give reasons for your score. DO NOT mention garnish or smoke rings in your reasons for scoring. We judge meat only.

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
