Looks appetizing. A 9 for me.

7. The row on the left looks great, but more care was needed in arranging this nice looking meat. I can't tell much about the right row because it's all slathered in a gloppy sauce. This is a meat contest and I can't see the meat.

I would have scored higher if there was more meat in the box.

8, the chuncks on the left look awesome, the chuncks on the right look like the sauce was poured on and is not even.

Definitely NOT perfect, but still excellent on my card. The bark pieces appear moist and a little fatty (must have wonderful flavor!) and the other has too much sauce for my liking, but as a whole box I really like it - especially combining the two in my mouth!

Burnt end meat looks great. Pulled meat is ok. If you gonna sauce it do it all not just whats on top
score 6

Score 9 I'm not sure of the sauce, but if it looks well cooked, I would like to try it.

8 - Meat with the bark on the left looks very appetizing. The oversauced meat on the right, not so much.

Suggestion: Be careful with the sauce and place the meat closer together to get rid of all the green space. Maybe even add more meat if needed.

I give the box a 7.

The meat on the left with burnt ends seems to be a bit more presentable and would probably taste better. I would go that for my turn in and just leave the rest out. Keep in mind when judges score they taste and score everything in the box so if you have some meat that would get a 9 and a 2nd pile that would get a 7 your final score will be an 8. However if you left out the meat that scored a 7 you would get a 9!.

9 - Could be more organized but still has an excellent appearance. Big ups for the two cuts.

almost there! The sauce on the right looks like it is not a part of the meat and the left row has a couple placement issues. Would be stronger on the left if the bark were consistantly displayed front ot back.

A lot of attention wenet in to the placing of the meat. Meat looks moist. Maybe a little over sauced on the right row. The wide vacant strip down the middle is a small negative but not enough to keep it from being a ----9

7=above average

Fill that box with meat...easy on the sauce

Bark and no bark sauced! Probably 8

7. One row of all bark, one with sauce heavy on top. Not hitting the right meat appearance for me.

Sliced/chunked looks tasty...nice bark, but looks a little disorganized. Pulled saucing looks uneven. Even with negatives, meat looks tasty.

The bark chunks on the left look great. The chunks on the right look OK, but he sauce is uneven with some bare spots. I would give this box an 8.

Crappy picture Herb!
This stuff looks great though. I always like getting pork boxes with some sauced and some without. Pork on the left has great bark and looks juicy

Scott - that was my only "blurry" photo. Good eye ;-)

Score: 7
I sure wish that the cook had not decided to paint sauce all over the meat on the right side- should just let the meat shine on its own. The left side (with the bark) looks SOOOOO fantastic- too bad the whole box wasn't composed of that product.

Dick-CBJ

Score 8. I do not really care for this layout and even though the pork looks to be nice and moist I don't think it was necessary to coat the pork with so much sauce.

FROSTBUSTER BBQ JUDGES "Appearance" Scores:8,8,9,9,9,9

Great looking box, but BBQ Critic judges take issue with the sauces side. may want to re-think this area - go easy on the sauce. The photo was indeed blurry, so really didn't represent this box at its best.

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
