On the small side - but that doesn't make them look any less yummy

They look a little lonely. 8

Score 8 Look like 6 moist ribs that are nicely arranged in the box. I would hate to see this cooker miss a perfect score for not exceeding the minimum number of pieces in the box.

7 - Hard to tell from the picture but they look dark. The rib sections seem small, no?

I give the box a 7.

Nice glaze, but ribs on the top seem to be off in size quit a bit.

I went between a 7 or 8 on this one. The ribs look good but being so small they justy don't pop. I would have suggested to put more in the box

Looks like the cook could only find 6 ribs that were decent to put in the box. I realize that they are only required to put 6 ribs in the box, but it doesn't help the appearance to have all that green on both sides. The ribs on the top (overlay) seem to be from the same rack, but the bone sticking out on the top is strikingly dissimilar.

cbj/comp cook, 8 maybe 9 in person.

9 - Meat looks great.

Note: Instead of laying that row of 3 ribs on top, it would have looked better if you layed them all flat on the parsley. Too much green showing.

7 Larges junks of meat missing, over sauced. Appears to be over done

Henry - I can tell you the ribs were not overcooked. In fact, four judges complained the ribs were either "overdone" or simply "too hard to pull of the bone."

You may want to leave it to the "tenderness" category to determine if the ribs are "overcooked" or "undercooked." That's the only true way to know and your score will reflect this verdict fairly to the cook.

8, maybe a 9 in person. nice pull back, but looks like too much sauce (might be the photo). would like to try them

8 - Oversauced. I'll overlook the uneven cuts in the back b/c I'd like to taste.

Once again, I would like to see the meat of the ribs to properly score this entry. Based on the picture I would score this entry an 8. The ribs appear to be more bone than meat and also are very heavily coated with sauce . If I received this as my order in a resturant I would be disappointed due to the ribs being more bone than meat.

The ribs look nice and are all well proportioned. The cuts aren't straight though and that is a little distracting. The color is mostly uniform and the sauce looks even too. I'd give this box an 8.

David/CBJ

High 8. Sauce splattered on the bones. Looks like too much sauce glopped on the ribs for my liking.

9, nice box, but I wonder why they didn't put 8 ribs in the box...it would have filled the box better and made for an even nicer appearance.

FROSTBUSTER BBQ JUDGES "Appearance" Scores: 8,8,8,8,9,9

BBQ Critic & Frostbuster agreed on "uneven cuts." However, Frostbuster judges did not complain about "too much sauce". The BBQ Critic judges did. I think this may be a direct result of the photo itself. I saw this box in person and I did not see any sauce issues.

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
