Very little creativity. Looks like it was basically tossed in the box, 8

A couple sloppy cuts, and it looks like 3 or 4 different racks are here making making me think the cooking didn't go so well.

Score 8 If these are from one slab, I would prefer them to be arranged so that it looked like it was not a random selection.

6 - Haphazard placement in the box is not good. Also the continuity of the portions are imbalanced, some showing bones and some not. Work on uniformity of the pieces

Meat looks appetizing... a little un-uniform but a 8 non the less.

I give the box a 7.

Ribs look good, but seems like the sizes are all over the place. Some short, some long, some thick some thin. Try and even out the ribs and select the 6 that are the closest in size and align them side by side.

Ribs are too dissimilar in size and coloration to be excellent. Two with exposed bone, one definitely longer than all the rest, they look tasty, but too different.

8 - Overall, the meat looks good. I'm usually not that concerned about the pieces being exactly the same size, but there a couple on the top right that just don't belong. Change them out to pieces that are close in size and this box is a nine.

comp cook/cbj, 7 this box is average to above average to the ones I've judged both on line and in person. If the ribs were a little closer in size and arranged a little more symmetrical in the box it could easily be a 9.

8 Variuos sizes, looks to have come from two different racks. I bet these tasted great

Mike CBJ KCBS

7, ribs appear to be from different racks and not a lot of thought went into the meat placement. Look like it was thrown in very quick.

7 - Unever cuts, spacing, and no POP!!

Dick-CBJ

Score 8. Even though the ribs look good, but not great, I do not like the way these ribs were placed into this box. They appear to be thrown into the box with no consideration to appeal and the ribs aren't even close in size.

Doug KCBS/CBJ CTC

Looks like some effort to place the ribs in the box, but doesn't look very need. There are some dark patches on the ribs at the left side of the box. The last rib on the far right is way longer than the rest and looks out of place. I'd give this box a 7.

David/CBJ

7. Don't like how ribs are arranged in container. Ribs have different appearance - some have bone sticking out, some don't. Ribs look a little dry, sauce is wet-looking. Some of the ribs look a little crispy on the ends.

John - KCBS/MCBJ, CTC, Rep; MBN

7 maybe an 8 in person. I believe this could have been arranged better. I took off for the unequal length and width of the ribs.

could be placed in box a little nicer.
got some burn spots or the sauce was put on and got a little scourched.

Score: 8 - Good color, slicing is okay. Placement and ribs sizes are a bit out of sorts but overall, they look appealing.

7 ribs look good
mis-matched sizes and spaces between samples hurt this box

FROSTBUSTER BBQ JUDGES "Appearance" Scores: 8,8,8,8,8,9

BBQ Critic & Frostbuster judge scores were very close. A common problem from both sides is "uneven placement" and cuts were not "uniform" or appeared to come from a "different" slab of ribs. Sometimes the cook will have no other choice to use what they have, but we suggest picking ribs as close to the same size as possible or make it look more uniform. This will most definitely please judges.

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
