Score 9 That is a lot of sauce, Let's hope it tastes good enough to get 9's.

Nice but now Wow. 8

It looks like the ribs on the bottom are burned. It looks like the sauce on the top layer was brushed on after the were done. The picture might be fooling me but these might be a 5 or six in person if the are really burnt up

7. Don't like the placement in the box and it looks like the back row of ribs are overdone. Maybe an 8 in person.

8. Nice color, carefully arranged and prepared, little heavy on sauce.

Don't know if it's the picture or the fact I am doin this on my phone. But this box does not look appetizing to me. I will give the benefit of the doubt to the cool and score this an 8.

Oversauced. Lighten up and they'd be a 9.

8. Looks like different levels of doneness on these. Could be the picture, but heavy hand on the sauce (no deduction). Loce to try some now.

7. These look megadry to me, particularly what I can see of the partially obscured bottom row.

Awesome looking ribs. Nice color and uniformity. I'd give this box a 9. The only issue I can see is the ribs on front have a gap between them.

8, nice pull back but too much sauce

Way over sauced. Brush marks. Care not taken in positioning of the ribs. 7

Score 7. The entry does not appeal to me. It appears that the ribs were overcooked due to the meat shrinkage on the bones and the darkness of the meat. I believe that the cook knew this as he placed the worst ribs in the back row and coated the front ribs with sauce. The uneven color and size is also a hugh distraction.

9 - A little saucy but overall, I want one. Great color!!!

7 - Too much sauce, and not evenly applied. The bottom right pieces do not look very appetizing.

I give the box an 8

Meat looks good, cuts and nice and sharp, glaze is great, but not enjoying the burnt bones on the top. I would suggest putting that end under the bottom row so you see the "good side" only.

7 - looks like the bottom ribs didn't turn out so good and the top ribs are for cover up.

7 just looks average

Tom KCBS CBJ

Whenever I see sauce this thick I look for what they are trying to hide under it from the photo i can't tell the ribs at the lower right look like they might be crispy over cooked. 7

7 - Ribs portions are too different. Sauce has brush strokes on some pieces

M@ CBJ/KCBS

7

Brush strokes are always a turn off... makes me think the sauce will be cold. Bottom ribs look like there were problems with open flame etc.

Looks pretty appetizing, but with the bones sticking out on some but not all the ribs it is distracting. The sauce could be spread more evenly - some places it appears too thick compared to others.

Pic is a bit dark, so I'm discounting this. If it's this dark in real-life, I'd probably take another point off. Anyway, nice appealing arrangement, but perhaps a bit too much sauce for my liking and it's streaky (taking away from the overall appeal).

pretty box...very close to a 9

Jim H - SBN CBJ/KCBS CBH
5/21/2012 01:20:05 pm

6-7 - Though it's often difficult to tell in a picture, the ribs have too much sauce on the ones in the front (you can't see the meat) and the ones in back right look a bit charred.

Stephen - CBJ/KCBS
5/25/2012 04:39:56 am

8 - My only complaint about this box is the sauce looks uneven. It looks a little heavy on the three ribs on top/right and sparse on the rib second from left on top.

A comment not factored into my score is that the ribs should be more evenly spaced, perhaps pushed together to preserve heat. I understand they could have shifted after turn-in so I did not take off in my score.

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
